ITG PC spotted in Japan! (on a DDRSN2 cabinet) January 7, 2008

Posted by Kyle Ward in : ITG, News , trackback

This was brought to my attention a few days ago. I figured I’d share it here with all the ITG players.
(This video was later removed) :-)

EDIT - I’ve been asked to remove this sensitive video. Sorry for the confusion…

Cracked version of ITG PC on a dedicab SN2 machine. The Japanese do know a good game when they see it. No seriously. Some of the best games are Japanese only. Gotta love them. :D

I concur, after the earlier article that Kyle put up about ITG cabinets being replaced by SuperNOVA cabinets

I actually find it interesting that it was in Japan, seeing how the fanbase for dance related games is more on DDR.

Sorry if this is personal business, but was it Konami who asked you to remove it? I think this is just an interesting topic. I think it was very cool to see ITG make it all the way to Japan. I don’t see why Konami is freaking out over it, theres tons of ITG videos over youtube. Oh well, probably something about copywright infrigement.

It’s because they don’t want Konami to find out they converted they cabinet. If they did get caught, Konami would disconnect them from e-amuse and wouldn’t sell them anymore Konami brand products.

Major bummer. I would imagine that the person that uploaded the video (or maybe it was the original owner of the video if it wasn’t the one who posted it on YouTube) that asked to have it removed because of what Cata said.

Ya know, Konami did gain intellectual property rights to the ITG series, so technically they are allowed to do this. I’m not saying it’s fair or right, but I am saying they could probably get away with it.

The only thing I want to see is Konami taking the intellectual rights they have obtained and reviving the series with it. Since most of the project was already finished, and since ITG has developed such a fanbase, it would make sense if they just allowed the release. Hell, they don’t have any excuse not to, they’d be making more money. Besides, I’m sure the players don’t really care who releases the game (whether it be Roxor or Konami or even another company) so long as the project is released for everyone to enjoy.

As much as I’d like to stick to that hope, I doubt that’s happening. This has been beaten over so many times, and IANAL, but here’s my take:

1. Konami got the IP rights to ITG. I’m not certain that necessarily includes the licensing to the songs used by ITG, and if not, that’s a barrier to simply releasing the game.
2. Konami does have its own game already. DDR is more visible than ITG; from a business perspective it makes more sense to promote DDR. And as much as I’d like to see ITG stuff even in DDR, the licensing of the music comes into issue at that point - if the licenses were not transfered as part of the settlement, then I don’t expect it to happen.

Those are the two biggest things there IMO. Believe me, I’d love ITG to be revived as much as the next ITG fan, especially after coming back to the US after a year and a half in Japan to see how much ITG could kick my ass, but it sadly is not happening.

At least I was able to get a copy of ITG PC off of eBay before going back J-side… fond memories while in the country with no diversity of dance games…
